Just as you’re about to enter the cozy town of LaConner, you’ll cruise around a roundabout and glimpse the 50-acre fresh market garden of Hedlin Farms. This Certified Organic wing of Hedlin Farms is open to visitors and well worth the stop with over 100 varieties of produce grown in the rich Skagit Valley.

Rasmus Koudal arrived in the region from Denmark in 1906, declaring it to be similar to his homeland. Today, his great-grandchildren, Dave Hedlin and Serena Campbell farm the property. Since 1974, they’ve learned to embrace the mild winters and warm, dry summers to get the most out of the land. The acreage has grown over time, but still produces some of those original crops from a century ago: beets, spinach, cabbage, cauliflower, and peas.

Another change that’s occurred over time is the transition to organic farming. As the locavore movement has become increasingly popular over the first two decades of this century, so too has Dave Hedlin’s shift to more organic farming practices. The farm has moved away from being just a 400-acre mass production farming operation to one that can grow fresh fruit and vegetables for local markets, restaurants, and consumers. And with the high-profile location just outside of LaConner, it’s probably one of the most accessible local producers in Skagit County.

The heritage of this over-a-hundred-year-old farm shines in everything they produce. We’re grateful to be sourcing from these farmers growing alongside the vast fields of Skagit Valley tulips. If Denmark is indeed similar to western Washington, then we hope the Danes are enjoying the same rich bounty of fresh cauliflower, cabbage, lettuce, snap peas, heirloom tomatoes, beans, beets, blueberries, broccoli, carrots, cucumbers, pumpkins, onions, squash, strawberries, sweet corn, and swiss chard.
